  • 33 Million Domains Registered in 2007

33 Million Domains Registered in 2007

Report released by VeriSign, shows that over 33 Million domain names were registered in 2007, bringing the total up to 153million domains.

Below is a summary of the report:

In the last quarter of 2007, the base of domain name registrations grew 27 percent over the fourth quarter of 2006 and five percent over the third quarter of 2007… The total base of Country Code Top Level Domain Names (ccTLDs) was 58 million, a 33 percent increase year over year and a six percent increase quarter over quarter. Across all of the gTLDs and ccTLDs, .com has the highest base followed by .de (Germany), .net and .cn (China). The fifth spot is shared by .uk (United Kingdom) and .org. with approximately the same size base of domain name registrations.

This release also states that the adoption of IPv6 has been relatively slow in the United States as compared to Asia and Europe. More than 100 domain name registries (i.e. top-level domain managers) support IPv6 for name servers and DNS queries including VeriSign who has supported IPv6 for .com and .net since 2002. The root name servers were enabled for IPv6 in February 2008 with the inclusion of IPv6 addresses for six of the thirteen root servers, including the A and J root servers operated by VeriSign.

  • If You're Going To Steal Software, Steal From Us: Microsoft Exec

If You're Going To Steal Software, Steal From Us: Microsoft Exec

Microsoft business group president Jeff Raikes estimates that between 20% and 25% of all software used in the United States is pirated, but said some pirates end up becoming paying customers.

    By Paul McDougall
    InformationWeek
    12, 2007 03:00

If you're going to be a software counterfeiter, then please copy and illegally use Microsoft products.

The above plea isn't from a posting on a hacker forum. Rather, it's how Microsoft business group president Jeff Raikes feels about software counterfeiters. "If they're going to pirate somebody, we want it to be us rather than somebody else," Raikes said.

The remarks might seem surprising, coming from a senior executive at a software company that spends millions each year fighting software piracy and developing copyright protection technologies.

But Raikes, speaking last week at the Morgan Stanley Technology conference in San Francisco, said a certain amount of software piracy actually helps Microsoft because it can lead to purchases by individuals who otherwise might never have been exposed to the company's products.

"We understand that in the long run the fundamental asset is the installed base of people who are using our products," Raikes said. "What you hope to do over time is convert them to licensing the software."

Raikes said Microsoft isn't about to abandon efforts to track down those who illegally copy and use its products. However, he said Microsoft has to balance that approach with the recognition that users of purloined software could one day become legitimate customers.

"You want to push towards getting legal licensing, but you don't want to push so hard that you lose the asset that's most fundamental in the business," said Raikes, who estimated that between 20% and 25% of all software used in the United States is pirated.

Raikes said Microsoft is developing so-called "pay-as-you-go" software offerings with pricing schemes similar to those used by cell phone companies for emerging markets as a way of encouraging low-income individuals to use the company's products legally.

  • Google 7.68 Terabits Per Second Cable

Google 7.68 Terabits Per Second Cable

Search giant finalizes plan for Pacific fiber being ran.

The recent quakes in Taiwan highlighted a lack of redundancy in the Pacific, where fiber runs have about half the capacity found across the Atlantic. A number of companies are planning to rectify that -- including Verizon, who is working with a number of companies to run an 11,000 mile, five terabits per second (Tbps) cable from the United States (Oregon) directly to mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea.

Google is also laying Pacific fiber as part of a consortium named Unity, formed alongside six international companies. The coalition is building a 6,200 mile, 7.68Tbps capable fiber run from Los Angeles to Chikura, located off the coast near Tokyo. Google today announced they finalized the deal on the $300 million project. According to the press release Trans-pacific bandwidth demand continues to surge:

According to the TeleGeography Global Bandwidth Report, 2007, Trans–Pacific bandwidth demand has grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 63.7 percent between 2002 and 2007. It is expected to continue to grow strongly from 2008 to 2013, with total demand for capacity doubling roughly every two years. "The Unity cable system allows the members of the consortium to provide the increased capacity needed as more applications and services migrate online, giving users faster and more reliable connectivity," said Unity spokesperson Jayne Stowell.

It's obviously a nice deal for Google, given the content operator gets access to bandwidth at build cost. NEC Corporation and Tyco Telecommunications will build the fiber run starting immediately, and it should be completed by 2010, assuming that the undersea cable cutting bogeyman leaves them alone.

  • Encryption

    Encryption

encryption is the process of obscuring information to make it unreadable without special knowledge, sometimes referred to as scrambling. Encryption has been used to protect communications for centuries, but only organizations and individuals with an extraordinary need for secrecy had made use of it. In the mid-1970s, strong encryption emerged from the sole preserve of secretive government agencies into the public domain, and is now used in protecting widely-used systems, such as Internet e-commerce, mobile telephone networks and bank automatic teller machines.

Encryption can be used to ensure secrecy, but other techniques are still needed to make communications secure, particularly to verify the integrity and authenticity of a message; for example, a message authentication code (MAC) or digital signatures. Another consideration is protection against traffic analysis.

  • JPG (File Interchange Format)

    JPG (File Interchange Format)

JPEG is a commonly used standard method of compression for photographic images. The name JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee who created the standard. The group was organized in 1986, issuing a standard in 1992 which was approved in 1994 as ISO 10918-1. JPEG should not be confused with MPEG, the Moving Picture Experts Group, which produces compression schemes for motion pictures.

JPEG provides for lossy compression of images (although there are variations on the standard baseline JPEG which are lossless). The file format which employs this compression is commonly also called JPEG; the most common file extension for this format is .jpg, though .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif and .jif are also used.

JPEG itself specifies both the codec defining how an image is transformed into a stream of bytes, and the file format used to contain that stream. The file format is known as 'JPEG Interchange Format' (Often confused with the JPEG File Interchange Format), and is specified in Annex B of the standard. It is possible for JPEG data to be embedded in other file types, such as TIFF format images.

JPEG/JFIF is the format most used for storing and transmitting photographs on the World Wide Web. For this application, it is preferred to formats such as GIF, which has a limit of 256 distinct colors that is insufficient for color photographs, and PNG, which produces much larger image files for this type of image. The compression algorithm is not as well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics, and thus the PNG and GIF formats are preferred for these types of images.

The MIME media type for JPEG is image/jpeg (defined in RFC 1341).

  • PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

    PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was created to improve and replace the GIF format, as an image-file format not requiring a patent license.

PNG is pronounced "ping" , but can be spoken "P-N-G" to avoid confusion with network tool ping. PNG is supported by the libpng reference library (platform-independent), with C functions for handling PNG images.

  • Cookie

    Cookie

The term Cookie derives from "magic cookie", a packet of data a program receives but only uses for sending it again, possibly to its origin, unchanged. Magic cookies were already used in computing when Lou Montulli had the idea of using them in Web communications in Mar 1993.

    Purpose
HTTP cookies are used by Web servers to differentiate users and to maintain data related to the user during navigation, possibly across multiple visits. HTTP cookies were introduced to provide a way for realizing a "shopping cart" (or "shopping basket"), a virtual device into which the user can "place" items to purchase, so that users can navigate a site where items are shown, adding or removing items from the shopping basket at any time.

Allowing users to log in to a website is another use of cookies. Users typically log in by inserting their credentials into a login page; cookies allow the server to know that the user is already authenticated, and therefore is allowed to access services or perform operations that are restricted to logged-in users.

Many websites also use cookies for personalization based on users' preferences. Sites that require authentication often use this feature, although it is also present on sites not requiring authentication. Personalization includes presentation and functionality. For example, the Wikipedia Web site allows authenticated users to choose the webpage skin they like best; the Google search engine allows users (even non-registered ones) to decide how many search results per page they want to see.

Cookies are also used to track users across a website. Third-party cookies and Web bugs, explained below, also allow for tracking across multiple sites. Tracking within a site is typically done with the aim of producing usage statistics, while tracking across sites is typically used by advertising companies to produce anonymous user profiles, which are then used to target advertising (deciding which advertising image to show) based on the user profile.

    Browser Setting
Described in " How to Enable Cookie " section.

    Cookie Expiration
Persistent cookies have been criticized by privacy experts for not being set to expire soon enough, and thereby allowing some websites to track users and build up a profile of them over time. This aspect of cookies also compounds the issue of session hijacking, because a stolen persistent cookie can potentially be used to impersonate a user for a considerable period of time.

    Identification
If more than one browser is used on a computer, each usually has a separate storage area for cookies. Hence cookies do not identify a person, but a combination of a user account, a computer, and a Web browser. Thus, anyone who uses multiple accounts, computers, or browsers has multiple sets of cookies.

Likewise, cookies do not differentiate between multiple users who share a computer and browser, if they do not use different user accounts.

  • e-Commerce

    e-Commerce

Electronic Commerce is exactly analogous to a marketplace on the Internet.

Electronic Commerce (also referred to as EC, e-commerce eCommerce or ecommerce) consists primarily of the distributing, buying, selling, marketing and servicing of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.

The information technology industry might see it as an electronic business application aimed at commercial transactions; in this context, it can involve electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, e-marketing, online marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), automated inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Electronic commerce typically uses electronic communications technology of the World Wide Web, at some point in the transaction's lifecycle, although of course electronic commerce frequently depends on computer technologies other than the World Wide Web, such as databases, and e-mail, and on other non-computer technologies, such as transportation for physical goods sold via e-commerce.

  • Why do I receive a SSL warning when I access control panel?

Why do I receive a SSL warning when I access control panel?

SSL provides a level of security and privacy for those wishing to conduct secure transactions over the Internet. Introduced by Netscape, the SSL protocol protects transmissions over the Internet by encrypting information as it passing between the server and the user. This insures that your transactions are not subject to "sniffing" by a third party.

The Plesk Panel provides two ways of access – Secured and Unencrypted. The first one encrypts the connection between your browser and control panel. The second one (Unencrypted) provides connection on the regular port 8880.

Since the Plesk Panel is a local one and is being accessed per Customer domain, we have installed a SSL certificate for server domain, which ensures your secured connection to the server when using the first method. The warnings are being prompted due to the fact that your domain name mismatches the one that the SSL is generated for (the server's).

However, this is not a reason for your connection to be left unencrypted and you may safely click Continue to this website (not recommended) when receiving the warning. Your connection will be surely encrypted.

    • Example for Secured URL
      https://domainname.com:8443 (Recommended)
    • Example for Unencrypted URL
      http://domainname.com:8880

  • Transferring your website to Focus Network Company

Transferring your website to Focus Network Company

Already hosted with another provider? Want to move your website to Focus Network Company?

This tutorial will outline the steps required to migrate your website and email accounts to your new account in Focus Network Company.

    • Step 1 - Backup your files
First of all, you need to download the site from your old host. You can do this in one of two ways:
      • Backup your site through Plesk
If your old host uses Plesk, and the Backup feature is enabled, you can download your entire site in a couple of clicks.
      • Backup your site via FTP
If your host does not use Plesk or they do not have the backup function enabled, then you should backup your site using FTP. Typically you need to connect to your website via FTP, download your www or public_html folder (the names for this folder differ; it is the folder that contains your website).

The tutorials below will show you how to connect and transfer files using the popular free FTP client software.
        1. Download and install FTP client software, such as Filezilla, CuteFTP, WS_FTP
        2. Connecting to your website with FTP client software
        3. Transferring files to/from your website with FTP client software

    • Step 2 - Backup and restore your MySQL databases
If you do not have any MySQL databases, you can skip to Step 3.

To transfer MySQL databases from your old host to Focus Network Company, there are two methods you can use:
      • Backup/Restore MySQL databases via Plesk
This uses the same Plesk function as the file backup section does. you can backup your database in a couple of clicks.
      • Backup/Restore MySQL databases via phpMyAdmin
If your host does not use Plesk/the backup function is disabled, you can backup and restore MySQL databases using phpMyAdmin. Follow the tutorials below for instructions on how to import and export MySQL databases in phpMyAdmin.
How do I export or backup a MySQL Database
How do I import a MySQL Database / Creating or Importing a Database

    • Step 3 - Upload your files to your account
Now you need to upload your files to your Focus Network Company account. If you backed up your files using the Plesk backup feature, you can upload them easily through your Plesk by following the tutorial above ("Restoring Data From Backup Archives").

If you backed up your files using FTP, simply connect to your account using FTP client software and upload your files into the httpdocs folder.

    • Step 4 - Create email address on your account
Before you point your domain to your Focus Network Company account, its a good idea to create the email addresses through Plesk first. Simply create the email addresses you want on your account by following the tutorial below:
How to setup Your Emails on PLESK Control Panel / Creating Mailboxes

    • Step 5 - Point your domain to your account
By this point your account with Focus Network Company should mirror your account at your current host; you should have uploaded your site files and MySQL databases and created your email accounts. Once you are sure you have completed all the steps above, its time to change the nameservers of your domain.

Login to your domain control panel at your registrar and modify the nameservers for your domain to the ones we sent you in the welcome email.

      • Below are our DNS information:

        ns1.powersx.com
        ns2.powersx.com
How to point my existing domain name to "Focus Network Company" server?

Once you have done this, wait for your domain to propagate. This can take between 6-72 hours, depending on your location. To see if your domain has resolved correctly to your Focus Network Company account, type your domain name into the tool below and hit Lookup. On the next page scroll down to the Whois Record section. If the Focus Network Company nameservers are listed here, then your domain name has resolved.

      http://www.whois.sc

Check your domain name is displaying correctly, and then proceed to the next step.

    • Step 6 - Cancel your account at your old host
Once you have updated your nameservers and your domain name has resolved correctly, you can cancel your account at your old host.

Make sure you backed up all your files; getting data back after you have cancelled your service with a provider can be quite difficult.

    • Congratulations, you have succesfully moved your website to Focus Network Company!

  • How To Fix DNS Cache Issues

How To Fix DNS Cache Issues

If your website is not coming up, is showing a Plesk Default Page, or if your email is not working, it may be due to the fact that our web servers have recently changed IP Addresses.

Personal Computers will often store IP Address information for 24-48 hours so if you are not able to access your website or email it may be because your computer is trying to find the servers at their old addresses.

Here's what you need to do (Windows):
    1. Close all Internet Explorer Browsers or other Browsers you may have open.
    2. Close all email applications such as Outlook or Outlook Express.
    3. Click The Start Menu.
    4. Choose Run.
    5. Type "command" and hit Enter (a DOS prompt will open).

Are you able to send emails but not receive?

Either your E-Mail address setting is wrong, or your domain is out of disk space. You will need to increase the amount of disk space to receive mail again.

Does it say "please enter your username and password for the following server" and you are sure you're using the correct information?

Most of our servers have a 60 checks per hour limit. If you hit this limit in any hour you'll be locked out for the rest of the hour. you will need to click: Tools > Options > General > and disable where it says "check for new messages every xx minutes".

If you do not want to disable it just set it to check less often. keep in mind the more computers you have auto checking or checking the mail the quicker you will hit this limit.
